The Freedom Monument, also known as the Memorial to the Glory of Labour, is a memorial in the city of Novosibirsk, Russia. It is located in the city's Central Square, in the south-western corner. The monument was erected in 1967 on the 50th anniversary of the October Revolution. The monument stands 12 meters (39 feet) tall and consists of a red granite obelisk surmounted by a winged statue of a woman, representing the spirit of freedom, and a 6 meter (20 foot) granite bas-relief depicting Soviet soldiers, farmers, and workers. The monument has been the site of numerous demonstrations, most notably in 1985, when an estimated sixty thousand people attended a candlelight vigil to commemorate victims of Stalinist repression. The monument was also featured in the international press in 1989 when democracy campaigners drew an outline of a 'word globe' with candles on the pavement around the monument in order to reflect the world-wide call for the end to Soviet totalitarianism.
