The Church of the Savior on Blood in St. Petersburg is a spectacular Russian Orthodox church, built between 1883 and 1907. It is located near the site where Tsar Alexander II was assassinated in 1881. The church was built to commemorate the emperor's death, and is often referred to as the "Church on Spilled Blood." The church has a unique blend of traditional Russian and modern forms of architecture, and is adorned with colorful, ceramic tiles and intricately painted mosaics. The interior is made up of hundreds of vividly painted icons, some of which were painted by famous Russian iconographer Iliya Galkov. Inside, visitors can find seven chapels, each dedicated to a specific saint, as well as a museum displaying items related to Tsar Alexander II's life and death.
