Catholic Hatsudai Church is a historic Roman Catholic Church located in the historic Tokyo district of Hatsudai, Japan. It has been a place of prayer and worship for over 200 years and is the oldest Catholic Church in Tokyo. It is the mother church of the Catholic Diocese of Tokyo, and was founded in 1817 by French priest François Pallu. It is one of the best churches in Japan which you must visit.

History:

Catholic Hatsudai Church was established as a mission of the Foreign Mission of Paris Society in 1817. In 1829, the church was relocated to large premises which had previously belonged to prominent local merchant Matsumoto Toree; this site remains the location of the church today. The original building was a wooden one-story structure, built to be earthquake-resistant. The present form of the present building dates from 1951, when a four-story building was constructed. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Japan.
