Stella Maris was founded in 1906 when an influx of recent immigrants needed a place to worship. The parish was originally composed of Lithuanian immigrants and was first blessed by the Archdiocese of Cleveland. In 1910, a larger building was built to accommodate the growing congregation. In the 1950s, the parish changed its focus to helping those in need in the immigrant community and became a hub for immigration and refugee services. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Jamaica.

Stella Maris is the oldest multicultural parish in the Diocese of Cleveland. The parish is home to over 3,000 families representing over 45 nationalities, including Lithuanian, Polish, Korean, Iraqi, Cuban and South Asian. Stella Maris hosts both English and Spanish Mass every Sunday and celebrates multiple liturgies including the Easter Vigil, Christmas Midnight Mass, Solemnity of the Sacred Heart, Solemnity of the Assumption and Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception.
