St. Thomas Ye Vale Anglican Church was founded by the Church of England mission in 1790 to bring Anglican practice to the new settlers in the area. The first services were held in a local plantation house until it was decided that a church was needed. The church built was the first brick church west of the Allegheny Mountains and was known as St. Thomas Ye Vale, taken from the Welsh “St. Thomas of the Valley”. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Jamaica.
