Holy Trinity Cathedral dates back to 1879, when the first foundation stone was laid and construction began on the church grounds. The church was originally called Saint Matthew's and was located in a residential area in Pretoria. The building was expanded in 1896 with the construction of a new chancel and a north aisle, and renamed as Holy Trinity.
