Grace Temple Church was founded in 1898 by Reverend William S. Hoke. It was the first African-American church to be established in the city of Raleigh. Following the Civil War, Reverend Hoke served as pastor of a Methodist church in the city. He sensed a need for his own church and in 1898 founded the Grace Congregationalist Church of Christ. As word spread of the church’s establishment, more members joined and by 1913, the church was renamed Grace Temple Church.
