Architecturally, the mosque is an example of the prominent tradition of Islamic ablaq masonry, which combines different colors and stripes of brickwork to give it a uniquely ornate look. The mosque is composed of a large courtyard, four large Iwan (vaulted halls), several smaller domed rooms, and two Minarets. The main dome is an impressive feature, and is covered in bright blue tiles with a gold finial. The mosque is also adorned with a number of other details, including decorative arabesque patterns and gilded flourishes. The layout of the mosque follows a typical prayer-hall plan, with the the Iwan (vaulted halls) forming the outer perimeter of the mosque and the central courtyard serving as the prayer space. Inside, a marble shrine houses the remains of the first Imam, and the walls are lined with refectory tables for visitors to sit at. The mosque also contains two magnificent curved gateways, which are decorated in intricate floral relief and feature inscriptions of Qur'anic calligraphy.
