The Al-Sakib Mosque is a historic building located in Baghdad, Iraq. The mosque is an important landmark in Islamic architecture, as it is one of the earliest surviving mosques in Iraq built during the Abbasid period (750-1258 AD). The mosque is U-shaped in plan with a large inner court, surrounded by four iwans. Near the center of the mosque is a large domed roof of the prayer hall, which is supported by a central octagonal drum, surrounded by eight smaller drums. There are three secondary chambers that open into the quibla-iwan, the area facing the direction of Mecca. The mosque features a unique semi-dome opening system that facilitates passage through the main entrance. Minarets flank the entrance of the mosque and two smaller portals provide access to the inner court. Flanking the prayer hall and entrance is a large open courtyard, surrounded by the main portals and other structures. Al-Sakib Mosque displays a combination of both Shiite and Sunni motifs, and several crafts, including colorful carpets, some with geometric patterns. The mosque has been restored and recently houses several artifacts from Islamic literature, calligraphy, and Islamic arts.
