Located in Al-Masar area in Mosul, Al-Jihad Mosque is said to be one of the oldest operating mosques in Iraq. It dates back to 1st century AH / 7th century CE and was most likely built in the reign of the Umayyad Caliphate. It is known for its great Islamic learning centre which has been active for centuries. Al-Jihad Mosque is one of the major religious sites of the country, used by many to gather for prayers five times a day. For these purposes, the Mosque is well equipped with prayer rugs, ablution facilities, and a library with Islamic literature. One of the hallmarks of the mosque is its minaret which is the highest in Mosul. Al-Jihad Mosque and its attached historical buildings were unfortunately damaged in the Iraq War in 2006. Architecture:

The Al-Jihad Mosque, located in the Old City of Mosul in Iraq, was built in the mid-fourteenth century. It is one of the oldest and grandest mosques in the city, and its architecture reflects this. The mosque is a classic example of medieval Islamic architecture, made of local black basalt stone with a square minaret standing at the entrance. The prayer hall of Al-Jihad is surrounded by four semi-circular arches with stunning carved stone designs. The dome of the mosque is also decorated with geometric ornamentations and inscriptions of Quranic verses. At the entrance of the mosque two portals are adorned with carving particular Islamic motifs, symbols, and arabesque patterns, and the main entrance portal is crowned with a calligraphic inscription in Kufic script. The interior of the mosque is equally decorative, with its walls covered in intricate carvings, gold mosaics, and domes made of polished green marble. The overall design of Al-Jihad is a testament to the beauty and brilliance of Islamic architecture, and is an important part of the city’s heritage. Despite the destruction of the mosque during the violence of the Iraq War, it has since been restored to its former glory. This is why, it is considered one of the most beautiful mosque in the world.
