The complex includes buildings from the Qajar (1785–1925), Safavid (1501–1722), Afsharid (1736–1796), Ottoman (1299–1922), and Buyid (934–1055) periods. The most dominant feature is the grand mosque, which was constructed in 1218 and later restored by Shah Abbas II in 1606. This large mosque is distinguished by its four courtyards, high minarets and arches, and 130 domes. The prayer space of the mosque is a rectangular position with rows of iwans (covered rooms) and access to the gardens. Inside the mosque, visitors can find various calligraphic inscriptions and a marble-laid courtyard. There are also two madrasahs (schools) located within the mosque complex which were built in the early 15th century. The complex is well known for its unique mix of traditional Iranian and Arab architectural styles. This is why, it is considered one of the most beautiful mosque in the world.
