Brief History:

Masjid Raya Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin II - Palembang is the oldest and largest mosque in South Sumatra, Indonesia, and is located in the city centre of Palembang. It was built in 1761 and is believed to have served as the main place of worship for the sultanate of Palembang Sultanate for 200 years. The mosque was built in traditional Sumatran style with Malay carvings, distinctively curved eaves, and a single-level pitched roof. The main prayer hall features an arched central gallery, the muhibbah dome, and four panels with calligraphy in tajwid script inscribed on them. The prayer hall was formerly supported by 107 pillars and featured a raised platform in the middle of the hall, which served as the sultan's personal praying area. In 1825, an additional prayer hall was added to the mosque with three domes and four minarets. The original wooden construction of the mosque has been replaced with a modern reinforced concrete and aluminum structure. The renovations were endorsed by the Ministry of Religion as part of the country's first initiative to preserve historical structures. The Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin II Mosque is a grand mosque located in the city of Palembang, South Sumatra, Indonesia. The mosque is also known as the 'Raya Mosque', which translated to Grand Mosque. The mosque was constructed in the year 1718, and covers an area of 4.07 hectares. It is architecturally built in a Minangkabau style, and is supported by a tall brick wall, which surrounds the mosque. The mosque is the largest historical mosque of Southeast Asia and features two separate courtyards. The mosque also carries a unique minaret which stands at a height of 56 m and consists of seven levels covered with intricate carvings in the Minangkabau style. The unique minaret towers above a giant open courtyard which offers access to the mosque’s interior. Further, the mosque follows a typical reconstruction style which features beautiful stucco tanjung borders in its terracotta walls. The walls of the mosque are decorated with colorful wallpapers and floral designs and includes a wooden panel door carved with Arabic marble arches. The mosque is known for its unique mixture of eastern and western architectural influences, which has resulted in a wonderful blend of traditional Javanese and East Sumatran designs. Inside the mosque, there is an elegant prayer hall which is covered with a magnificent carpet, walls of wood carvings and floral designs on its ceiling and walls. There is also a large pool at the center of the mosque, which adds a sense of serenity to the place. The grand mosque also houses an Islamic library which is home to many historic manuscripts, books and documents about the history of Palembang and Tanjungrumpun.
