Construction of the mosque began in March 2007 by the local government in cooperation with the Wakatobi Islamic Majlis (Majlis Wakatobi) and was officially opened by Warden of Riau Islands on 7 July 2007. It is also the first mosque in Indonesia to be constructed with the help and donations from neighboring countries like Singapore, Malaysia, Brunei Darussalam and Thailand. The mosque is situated in Bukit Tunggal, Batam and is spread over an area of 36.7 hectares. The five-story mosque has a capacity of 3,000 worshipers and also includes a library, classrooms, lecture hall, and function halls for Islamic activities. The mosque has four tall towers with a total height of 107 meters which is visible from a far distance.
