The Jami’ Mosque, also known as the Masjid Agung, is one of the oldest mosques in Padang, West Sumatra, Indonesia. According to local history, the mosque was originally built during the 15th century by the Islamic scholar and philosopher Sunan Ampel, also known as Raden Rahmat (1401-1481). Sunan Ampel is thought to have learned the Quran and Islamic laws during his travels to Mecca. The mosque was designed with a classical Persian style using the Minangkabau architectural style. The Jami’ Mosque underwent a major restoration and renovation effort in the 19th century, and it is now the major prayer center in the city. The roof is made up of four eave slats, with an octagonal pyramidal form and colourful tile roofs. The walls are decorated with intricate calligraphy and geometrical shapes. Inside the prayer hall, there are several small chambers which feature painted walls, stained glass windows and arabic inscriptions. The inner tower is constructed from timber and is decorated with intricate carvings, with a traditional Malay cupola at the top. The inner tower has four levels, each with a different arabic inscription on its walls. The mosque complex also features a number of auxiliary buildings and gardens, as well as a ceremonial archway which is decorated with lavish geometrical patterns.
