The Al-Taqwa Mosque in Bandung, Indonesia is a unique example of Islamic architecture. Built in the ‘flying saucer’ style, the mosque was designed by the prominent architect Ridwan Kamil and showcases a modern, futuristic interpretation of traditional Islamic architecture. The structure comprises of four main sections, each made up of five large concrete walls. The eastern and western walls consist of three glass panels with a rooftop garden on top. The northern and southern walls are bladelike with metal fins that create a two-dimensional interplay of shadows when the sun rises and sets. The dome-like roof is fitted with a tilted skylight, allowing natural lighting to enter the space throughout the day. Inside the mosque, the main prayer hall is arranged symmetrically with the qibla wall, which is accompanied by a prayer niche and minbar at the centre. The floor is covered with colourful geometric tiles that run throughout the length of the prayer hall and culminate in an ‘altar’ where devotees can perform prayers. The raised platform in the mosque’s centre is decorative and helps enhance the acoustics of the space.
