The Asy-Syuhada Mosque in Surabaya, Indonesia was designed and built in 1980 by architect Amir Mochtar in the modernist-Indonesian architectural style. The main façade of the mosque features stepped brick patterns along its surface and opens to an entry courtyard with a dominant ocher-colored archway. A pair of slender minarets accompany the main façade and accentuate the skyline of the mosque structure. The interior of the mosque houses a main prayer hall with wood-clad ceilings and spacious mihrab containing intricate geometric tile patterns. To the sides, a series of classrooms and academic department corridors provide spaces for Islamic education. The roof of the mosque is supported by a grid of circular and rectangular columns and is outbuilt with an iconic spiral-shaped ventilator tower. These architectural elements come together to create a modern yet timeless interpretation of traditional mosque architecture in Surabaya.
