Istiqlal Mosque (Masjid Istiqlal) is the largest mosque in Southeast Asia and the third largest mosque in the world. The mosque was built to commemorate Indonesian independence and is named after the Algerian historical term Ishtiqlal (independence). It is located in Central Jakarta, between Merdeka Square and the State Palace, near the Indonesian National Monument (MONAS). Construction of the mosque began in 1961 and was completed in 1978. The building is supported by 12 columns symbolizing the date of July 12, the day Indonesia proclaimed its independence.
