Brief History:
Al-Qudus Mosque, or also known as Mesjid Al-Qudus, is a mosque in Surabaya, Indonesia. The mosque was built in 1907 by the famous philanthropic waqf donor of Surabaya, Haji Usman, an Indonesian Muslim of Indian origin. It is located in the centre of town, surrounded by an area of large houses, hotels, shops, restaurants and other related buildings. Al-Qudus is the third oldest mosque in Surabaya, the other two older mosques, Sunan Ampel Mosque and Jami’ Mosque, being the oldest two. Al-Qudus Mosque is still functioning and is a popular destination for tourists and local Muslims as well. The Main Gate of Al-Qudus Mosque is accompanied on either side by two minarets. The modern architectural design of the mosque gives visitors the feel as if they are stepping back to a time when Muslim kings ruled this area. The central prayer hall is surrounded by whitewashed walls, with two minarets jutting out at opposite ends. The interior works and decorations such as the domed roof, inlaid wood walls, marble floor, hanging lamps, and prayer rugs are all of superb and attractive workmanship. In the interior are four large pillars, which are made of hardwood, they are holding the roof up. The central space is then filled with many smaller pillars, that are made of textured plaster. Additionally, at the end of the large prayer hall, there is a mihrab-niche indicating the direction of prayer, which is towards Mecca. The Al-Qudus Mosque in Surabaya, Indonesia is a unique religious building. The prayer hall can accommodate up to 500 worshippers and is decorated with traditional Islamic calligraphy and designs. The Al-Qudus Mosque also features an impressive array of other facilities for its guests. These include a library, a meeting room, a kitchen, a school, and a children’s playroom. Finally, the mosque also features a remarkable fountain which is adorned with Arabic calligraphy. This is why, it is considered one of the most beautiful mosque in the world.
Visiting Hours:
Al-Qudus Mosque in Surabaya is open to visitors all days of the week, except on Fridays. On other days, visitors are welcome from 7.00 am to 5.00 pm. During the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, the visiting hours will be adjusted according to the local time. It is advisable to dress modestly during the visit and maintain the sanctity of the mosque premises. Photography is also allowed inside the mosque, as long as it is done without disturbing the worshippers.
