Pura Lempuyang Luhur is the second most important temple on the island of Bali, representing the spiritual center of the Hindu Universe. Like all other Balinese temples, rituals and offerings are an integral part of worship at this site. The main form of worship and prayers at the Pura Lempuyang Luhur temple is known as sanghyang – a Balinese trance ritual that calls upon the gods and spirits to come and protect the participants and villagers. Sanghyang is performed by Balinese priests and priestesses, who invoke the gods and spirits to enter a person's body so that they can act as a medium between the earthly realm and the divine. The most prominent type of offering that visitors present to the gods and spirits at Pura Lempuyang Luhur are canang sari - small baskets filled with flowers, fruits and other offerings. These offerings are laid out around the perimeter of the holy temple and then blessed with holy water. Finally, visitors to Pura Lempuyang Luhur pay their respects to the gods and spirits by performing tjawuk – a Balinese offering involving a spoonful of rice, a flower and a white ribbon which is held in the hands of the worshipper.
