Veerabhadra temple Overview The Veerabhadra temple is a prominent Hindu temple located in Lepakshi, in the district of Ananthapur of Andhra Pradesh, India. It is dedicated to Lord Veerabhadra, who is accepted to be an incarnation of Lord Shiva. The shrine is one of the Pancha Bhoota Stalas, which denote the five elements- water, air, fire, ether and earth. Veerabhadra temple Prominent Features The temple is surrounded by picturesque hills on three sides and showcases the plan of the Vijayanagar rulers. It is considered to be a fine example of the Vijayanagara style of architecture with its delicate carvings, inscriptions and vast pillared halls. There is a grand entrance gate of the temple, known as Mahadwara, which is lined up with six imposing Shiva monolithic pillars. Inside the temple there is a large open courtyard leading to a thousand-pillared mandapam, which is decorated with intricately carved figures of animals and birds. An interesting feature of the temple is the unfinished Kalyana mantapam, which was meant to be the venue of Shiva and Parvati's marriage. Veerabhadra templeHistory It is believed that the temple was built in the 16th century by two brothers, Veeranna and Tobanna, who were devoted to the service of Lord Veerabhadra. The temple was patronised by the Vijayanagar Empire rulers and their inscriptions which can be found in the prakarams or the entrance of the temples and within the main temple. After the fall of the Vijayanagar Empire, the temple fell into neglect and disrepair until it was restored and renovated by the British in the 19th century. Veerabhadra temple Interesting facts The temple is sometimes referred to as the ‘floating court’ as an interesting fact. The pillars of the temple are so structured that a clap made in one corner of the court can be heard in the other corner. There are also several carvings of Shiva, Parvati and Nataraja seen in the temple. The hanging pillar in the temple is one of the most striking features, as one side of the pillar is attached to the roof and the other part is free hanging.
