Overview:
irghaib to the north and near Hindu Rao’s House is a remnant of the old fortifications of the city of Delhi. The Pirghaib was constructed around 1533 by Sultan Sikander Lodi and was among the main sections of the long city which formed Delhi's defenses. The Pirghaib was demolished and rebuilt several times, it was originally more than 8 km long and almost 2 km wide and high. The Pirghaib stretched from Rajegath and Hira Nagri near Hindu Rao’s House, in the North-West to Ghaziudin Nagar in the North-East. This national monument of India portrays the history and culture of the country.
History:
The Pirghaib featured two major gates, the Purana Qila to the west and the Fatehpuri Masjid to the east. It also had eight watch towers and nine deep trenches. The walls were constructed of rubble stones and fortified with mud, which was likely strengthened with additions of wood, as wood was plentiful in Delhi during the period. The Pirghaib was used as a means of ensuring the security of the city during the rule of the Lodhi and Mughal empires. During this time, the city was divided into four distinct areas known as gaornas, or fortifications. These four fortifications were known as the Khorasan, the Saiyar Rah, the Purana Qila, and the Pirghaib.
