The origin of Sri Srikanteshvara Temple is believed to be from around the 10th and 11th centuries. It was built by Chalukya King Tailapa in memory of his beloved wife, Thirumala Devi. In later years, the temple was renovated by Chalukya kings such as Pulakeshin II, Satyasraya, Tailapa II and Vikramaditya II in order to showcase the Chalukya Empire's grandeur.
