Overview:
Siva Temple And Lion Pillar , located in Irumbanadu village of Tiruvannamalai district in Tamil Nadu, is an ancient temple situated on the banks of the river Palar. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and the Lion Pillar, which is a standout feature of the temple, takes the form of an iron pillar made of beautiful, ornamental iron that stands 7 feet tall overlooking the temple. The Sarkarabhujamurthi or the royal face, installed inside the temple is believed to be of Lord Shiva Himself. This national monument of India portrays the history and culture of the country.
History:
The main feature of this temple is the Lion Pillar that stands at 7 feet in height and is made of ornamental iron. This structure is iconic for the temple and is believed to be sculpted in the 10th century by the Cholas. The Sarkarabhujamurthi idol which is installed within the temple is believed to be from the 6th century and is made of stone. Inside the temple, the predominant deities are Lord Shiva, and Goddess Parvathi, who are in the form of the Sarkarabhujamurthi and the Vara Murthi. Apart from the Siva temple and the Lion Pillar, the temple complex also houses ancient sculptures and idols, which are believed to have been installed by the Chola Kings.
