Overview:
Alagarmalai Cavern, Melur is an ancient cavern situated on the Alagarmalai hill in Melur, a small town in Tamil Nadu, India. It is believed to be around 2000 years old and is an important archaeological site. The cavern has been inhabited by the Jains, Buddhists, and Hindus at different points in history. The antiquity and significance of the cavern has led to its recognition as a protected monument by the ASI. The cavern consists of five chambers, which are connected to each other. This national monument of India portrays the history and culture of the country.
History:
The most prominent feature of the Alagarmalai Cavern is the sculpture of Lord Vishnu reclining on a serpent, which is quite exquisite. The sculptures of other Hindu gods and goddesses like Shiva, Ganesha and Saraswati can also be found in different chambers of the cavern. In addition to sculptures, the walls of the cavern are adorned with beautiful paintings including images of various Hindu gods and goddesses along with other motifs. The paintings are believed to have been painted in the 5th to 10th centuries. You must visit one of these historical places in India on your India tour

The Alagarmalai Cavern is believed to have been built during the Chola dynasty, between the period of 850-1250 AD. During the period, many Jain, Buddhist and Hindu monks used the cavern for worship and prayer. Excavations at the site have revealed that some of the sculptures were made by the king Karikala Chola who ruled during this period.
