Shahi Masjid, Guwahati is a historical mosque located in the city of Guwahati in north–eastern India. The mosque was built by Mirza Azim Shah in 1694–95AD and is one of the oldest surviving mosques in India. The mosque is of great cultural and architectural significance, and is popularly referred to as the ‘heart of Guwahati’. Despite a few additions by later rulers such as the Mughals and the British, the mosque largely retains its 17th century form. The architecture of the Shahi Masjid, Guwahati is a unique blend of both North and South Indian styles. The structure is a single-storied structure with a long covered courtyard in the middle. The mosque's impressive main entrance is faced towards the east side and houses three arched entrances leading into the courtyard. The central arch of the main entrance is elaborately decorated with intricate carvings. The building boasts a splendid facade that features typical Mughal style domes and minarets, as well as highly decorated domes and doorways. The interior of the mosque is also adorned with beautiful paintings and calligraphic inscriptions. The walls of the mosque are lavishly decorated with a mixture of floral motifs and inscriptions from the Qur’an. This is why, it is considered one of the most beautiful mosque in the world.
