Mound of Ghuram In India: History,Facts, & Services

Mound of Ghuram Overview Mound of Ghuram is an ancient archaeological site located near the village of Karafto in the Sudanese city of El Obeid. It is a large mound rising up to around 30 meters at its highest point, and is the largest and most significant archaeological site in El Obeid. The site measures around 700 meters in length and 200 meters in width. Prominent Features The mound is oval-shaped and consists of several layers of sand and gravel which have been deposited over time. These layers contain evidence of pre-Islamic settlement, including pottery shards, stone and metal artefacts, as well as some jewellery. These artefacts indicate that the mound was used from the Bronze Age into the Islamic period. The mound also contains a number of graves, likely to have been those of pre-Islamic nomadic people. History The Mound of Ghuram was first studied in 1980, when a team of Sudanese and international archaeologists began excavations at the site. These excavations uncovered evidence of early Neolithic settlements dating to around 5000 BCE. Later settlements on the mound were likely used by nomadic peoples as a temporary base. The presence of Islamic artifacts suggests that the site was used into the Islamic period, around the 11th century CE. Interesting facts The Mound of Ghuram is the only significant archaeological site in El Obeid, making it an important source of information about early medieval Sudanese history. The site has produced numerous artefacts, including stone tools, pottery shards, coins and jewellery. The findings from the mound have provided insight into the ancient history of the area and its population.
