Saptamukhi Vav In India: History,Facts, & Services
Overview:
Saptamukhi Vav is one of the many beautiful stepwells located in Patan, Gujarat. It is believed to have been constructed during the rule of Solanki dynasty, approximately around the 11th century CE. It is located close to Varaha temple and is situated to the north of the Sahastralinga Tank. This stepwell is built in a stepped rectangular formation, in which each storey is progressively lowered. This national monument of India portrays the history and culture of the country.
History:
The first prominent feature of Sapatamukhi Vav is its stepped construction. It has seven storeys in total, which gradually decrease in size as one moves downwards. On the left side of the entrance gate, there is a pointed arch, which is carved with motifs of foliage and lotus. The façade of the stepwell has adorned with intricate carvings of Gajalakshmi, humans, floral and animal figures. There is also a beautifully decorated crown at the top of the stepwell.
