Sakri Gumti-284 is a historical archaeological site located in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. This site, discovered in 1993, is an important collection of ancient megalithic monuments dating back to the 1st century AD. Sakri Gumti-284 Overview Sakri Gumti-284 is one of the more prominent megalithic sites in the region, located to the north of the Narmada River in the Jabalpur district of Madhya Pradesh. It is a large complex consisting of a variety of monuments, including tombs, wells, cairns, and stonescapes. The majority of these relics are believed to date from the 1st century AD though the original form of the site is unknown. Sakri Gumti-284 Prominent Features The most prominent features at Sakri Gumti-284 are its dozens of tombs, wells, cairns and stonescapes. The tombs are believed to be cremation burials and are made up of large stones and granite slabs arranged in circles and squares. The wells and cairns are likely religious constructions, or have been used for purposes such as storing water or serving as a shrine. The stonescapes are believed to be either astronomical or ritual constructions, arranged harmoniously around the other structures. Sakri Gumti-284 History The site was first discovered in 1993 by Dr. RB Mohanty, a professor at the Banaras Hindu University. Through subsequent excavations, it is thought that Sakri Gumti-284 likely served as a cremation ground for ancient people living in the area. It is believed to date from the 1st century AD and may have been a spiritual center for the region. Sakri Gumti-284 Interesting facts • The site contains approximately 60 tombs, 12 wells, 6 cairns and 12 stonescapes. • It is believed that Sakri Gumti-284 was a spiritual center for the ancient people living around the area, possibly serving as a cremation ground or temple site. • The site is located within the Narmada Valley, one of the most important agricultural regions in India. • Sakri Gumti-284 is an important showcase of the ancient megalithic architectural heritage of India.
