Overview : Sahadeva’s Ratha, Mamallapuram is a rock-cut temple that belongs to the era of Pallava Dynasty in 7th century. The temple is the earliest among the other five monolithic temples of Mamallapuram. Prominent Features : Built to worship Shiva, the ratha (temple) is constructed in typical Pallava’s architecture with three important religious structures, the Garbhagriha (garbhagriha), the mandapam (colo-sellum) and the mukha mandapam (gallery or pillared hall or entrance hall). Some intricate carvings of lions, couples, etc., are carved in the entrance of the temple. The inner walls are curved with beautiful sculptures of gods and goddesses, which reflect the talent of artisans during that time. History : The temple was built by Narsimha III of Pallava dynasty in 7th century CE. The rulers of Pallava dynasty showed a very keen interest in creating temples, which was a grand representation of their devotion and splendor. Most of these grand temples were built in Mamallapuram. Interesting facts : – The temple was built by the rulers of Pallava dynasty to honour Lord Shiva, the preserver of universe. – The walls of the temple are adorned with sculptures of Hindu gods and goddesses. –The structure of the temple can be divided into three parts, the garbhagriha (sanctum), the mandapam and the mukha mandapam. – The gateway of the temple is carved with the sculptures of a pair of lions.
