Sadasiva Temple In India: History,Facts, & Services
Overview:
va Temple is a prominent temple located in the Varanasi region of Uttar Pradesh, India. It is located near the banks of the Asi River and is dedicated to Lord Shiva, who is also known as Sadasiva. The temple is one of the five Jyotirlingas – shrines that have been said to have been founded by one of the five Pandavas. This national monument of India portrays the history and culture of the country.
History:
The Sadasiva Temple is unique in its architecture. It features four arch-shaped gateways, or gopurams, which give an impressive view of the courtyards and garbhagrihas (sanctum sanctorum). The temple also features a large shikara (dome-shaped tower) with a four-faced Shiva linga (aniconic representation of Shiva) at its pinnacle. Other interesting features of the Sadasiva temple include two large Nandis (bulls) facing each other and five minor shrines dedicated to Dattatreya, Nataraja, Bhairava, Narshimha, and Ugrachandi. Interesting facts:
The Sadasiva Temple is known to be the oldest Vishwanath temple in Varanasi and is said to have been built before the city's major temples, such as the Kashi Vishwanath Temple. Another interesting fact is that the temple has never been rebuilt or renovated and is still in its original condition.
