Overview:
Megalithic Cists Circumscribed by Stone Circles, Rajakulipettai is an important archaeological site located in Kallakurichi in the state of Tamil Nadu. Measuring around 30m in circumference, the site comprises two concentric circles of stones around a megalithic cist or grave. The grave was likely to have been created during the Early Iron Age period, dating back to between 8th to 5th century BCE. It is one of the few ancient megalithic structures found in India, with many such structures being concentrated mostly in Europe. History:
The megalithic grave at Rajakulipettai is a large cist, measuring around 5m x 2.6m. It is composed of rock slabs, which are scattered around the surrounding area. This structure is located in the center of two circles of stones that form a sacred boundary around the cist. The outermost stone circle is the wider of the two, consisting of 25 stones measuring around 30m in diameter. The inner circle is composed of 21 closely packed stones measuring around 20m in diameter.
