Buddhist Monastery at Gurubhaktulakonda How to Reach Ruined Buddhist Monastery at Gurubhaktulakonda is an ancient Buddhist monument located in Visakhapatnam district of Andhra Pradesh. It was discovered by British archaeologist in 1920. Situated on hill top of Dargah hills, it is believed to have been constructed during 2nd century AD. It is well known for its historic monasteries, statues and rock-cut artifacts. The Buddhist architecture and monasteries showcase the ancient Buddhist culture in this region. This national monument of India portrays the history and culture of the country.
History:
Ruined Buddhist Monastery at Gurubhaktulakonda has several ruined Buddhist monasteries, shrines and stupas that date back to 2nd century AD. It is also famous for its Stupa, which displays the typical props of Buddhism like a square Nirvana tower, a central stone relic casket, a circumambulatory path and a pavilion. • The main relic casket in the center of the Stupa has relief work made of bronze showing a seated king. • The Stupa is constructed using different kinds of rocks from separate quarries. • A large number of rock-cut sculptures found here show Buddha in different postures. • Several mud stucco sculptures are also found in this monastery. How to Reach: The Ruined Buddhist Monastery at Gurubhaktulakonda is located on the foothills of Dargah hills, 35 kms from Visakhapatnam. There are regular buses operating from Visakhapatnam to Anantagiri and Rock Beach, from where taxis and auto-rickshaws can be hired to reach the site.Visit one of the famous monuments of India with your friends and family.
