Rudabai Stepwell or Adalaj Stepwell Overview The Rudabai Stepwell, also known as the Adalaj Stepwell, is an ancient stepped water well located in the Indian village of Adalaj in the Indian state of Gujarat. It is 5 meters (17 feet) deep and was constructed in the 15th century, during the reign of the Vaghela dynasty. Rudabai Stepwell or Adalaj Stepwell Prominent Features The stepwell is beautifully decorated with carvings, paintings and sculptures on the walls and ceilings. The main structure is built from sandstone blocks, and rests on an octagonal base. At the center of the structure is a large circular well, from which an inner staircase descends to a lower level. The walls of the stepwell have arched windows, balconies, and niches, as well as intricate carvings of flowers, birds and scenes from Hindu mythology. Rudabai Stepwell or Adalaj Stepwell History The Rudabai Stepwell was commissioned by Queen Rudabai of the Vaghela dynasty. She had promised to build a stepwell so her son King Veersinh could use it to get water for his subjects. However, the queen died before the project was completed and the work was taken on by another architect from the same dynasty.
