Fort of Kumbhalgarh as a Whole Overview Kumbhalgarh is a magnificent fort in the Rajsamand district of Rajasthan, and is situated over the Aravalli hills and guarded by seven gates. The strong walls of the fort, which spread out from the foot hill to the top, made it a formidable fortress that could withstand multiple attacks and sieges, thus earning it the title of the ‘Great Wall of India’. Prominent Features The most prominent features of the fort include its 36 kilometre long wall, which is the second longest in the world and the only fort in Rajasthan to have seven fortified gates. The fort also boasts of a series of temples, many beautiful and ornate palaces and significant monuments that made it a popular tourist destination. History The history of Kumbhalgarh is closely linked to the history of Rajasthan, as it was built in the 15th century by Maharana Kumbh of Mewar dynasty. Over the years, it served as the bastion of Mewar kings and was also the birthplace of Maharana Pratap, one of the most famous kings of Rajasthan. Interesting Facts Kumbhalgarh houses a British-built observatory, which is the only of its kind in the whole of Asia, and nearly 360 temples within its premises. Furthermore, the fort also made it to the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 2013, and is considered one of the most important heritage sites of India.
