Rani Mahal is an ancient palace located at Gwalior in Madhya Pradesh, India. It was constructed in the middle of the 19th century for the royal visitors of Gwalior. The architecture of Rani Mahal is a mix of both Mughal and Rajput styles. Overview Rani Mahal is set at the outskirts of the Gwalior Fort in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh. Prominent Features The prominent features of Rani Mahal include an open hall with an elevated platform, surrounded by two snow-white sarangi-like structures. On both sides of the hall, there are two exquisite intricate works of carvings, done in an Indo-Persian style, depicting a battle scene. History Rani Mahal of Gwalior was constructed by Maharaja Dildeo Rao Scindia, a Hindu prince from the medieval era, who ruled the Gwalior State from 1827 to 1847. It is believed that he built it in 1843 to welcome the royal guests who visited the Gwalior Fort. Interesting Facts • During the tumultuous reign of the British Raj in India, the Gwalior Fort and its associated structures, including Rani Mahal, were taken over by the East India Company and Sir Hugh Rose, hence becoming a part of the British Empire. • The hall of Rani Mahal comprises an elevated platform that had witnessed the coronation of Madhavrao Scindia, who later served as the Maharaja of Gwalior. • This site is a protected monument under the Archaeological Survey of India. • The palace has now been turned into a government-run tourist Centre and is the most popular tourist attraction in Gwalior.
