Overview:
araswami Temple is an ancient Hindu temple located in Rameswaram, an island in Tamil Nadu, South India. It is dedicated to Lord Shiva, the presiding deity of the temple. The temple has a long history, with references dating back to the early 6th century A. D. There are also references to the temple in the ancient scriptures of Hindus, such as the Ramayana, Mahabharata, and Manimekalai. This national monument of India portrays the history and culture of the country.
History:
The temple is widely known for its long corridor, which is said to have over 2000 pillars. The corridor is one of the longest in India and is believed to be built by the Pandya kings in the 12th century. The temple also has a 74 meters tall gopuram, or tower, made of granite stones and is able to be seen from a great distance. Other important features of the temple include a devotees’ resting area, a priest’s residence, a Beemaru street, and an Akasaga Mandapam. 1. The temple is one of the twelve Jyotirlinga shrines - dedicated to Lord Shiva, and is said to be a very sacred place by devotees. 2. The temple hosts a number of festivals throughout the year, such as Masi Magam, Raksha Bandhan, and Shivaratri. 3. There are two main wells, the salt water well (Sagara Theertham) and the fresh water well (Gandhamadana Theertham) inside the temple complex, both of which are considered to be holy. 4. It is believed that the water from the fresh water well is believed to have medicinal properties. 5.
