Overview:
Prehistoric Burial Site, Melur is an interesting archaeological site located in the Melur Taluk of Madurai district, Tamil Nadu. It is situated about 4 kilometers from the center of Melur and 8 kilometers from the city of Madurai. The burial site contains numerous burials from early Neolithic and Iron Age periods. The site is remarkable for the presence of large numbers of antiquities, including terracotta figurines, pottery, stone tools, and jewelry. This national monument of India portrays the history and culture of the country.
History:
The most outstanding features of the site are the presence of large numbers of burials, along with terracotta figurines and other artifacts. The terracotta figurines are of the female gender and are mostly made of red clay. The pottery is decorated with incised designs of animals, birds, and human figures.
