., Overview Shahajanabad (the walled city of Delhi) was the seventh and last stronghold of the Mughal Empire before its downfall. The walled city was the imperial capital of the Mughal Empire during the reigns of Akbar and Jahangir, and it was later occupied by the Maratha Empire.Portions of the wall still remain visible around the old city, though the original wall was made up of red sandstone and marble, with features such as turrets and one main gate. Prominent Features The original city wall was built in the shape of an irregular pentagon. It was approximately 6 km in circumference, with 12 gates and over 14 turrets or bastions. The main gate, known as the Delhi Gate, was the main entrance to the city and still stands today. The height of the wall was about 10 to 12 meters and the area was enclosed on three sides by a moat which was filled with water from the Yamuna River. History Under the rule of Shah Jahan, the Mughal capital was shifted from Agra to Delhi and Shahjahanabad was built. Shah Jahan built many splendid structures within the walled city such as Jama Masjid, Red Fort, Salimgarh Fort, Fatehpuri Masjid and more. After the end of the Mughal Empire in 1739, Maratha rulers occupied Delhi and established a strong hold over the city. During the Great Revolt of 1857, the walls of Shahjahanabad were severely damaged. Interesting Facts The original wall of Shahjahanabad is said to have been designed by the renowned Mughal architect Ustad Hamid. The wall also has other interesting features such as water channels or 'kunds' which were built as part of an irrigation system. A portion of the wall still stands today near the famous Red Fort of Delhi. The gates of the walled city were beautifully decorated and ornately carved.
