Overview:
The Pitikeswara group of temples is located in the Kurnool district of Andhra Pradesh, India. This group of temples consists of three ancient Hindu temples known as the Pitikeswara, Pitamahalakshmi and Nageswaraswamy temple. The Pitikeswara temple is the primary shrine in the group, and was built in the 12th century. The temple complex also contains a tank and a monastery. History:
The prominent features of this group of temples are its exquisite carvings and highly detailed sculptures. The Pitikeswara temple is the most prominent among them, and comprises a four-storeyed tower with a stairwell, an antechamber, an open porch and a mandapa. This mandapa is supported by three giant carved figures known as Pitamaha, Pitamahasam and Srinivasa. The interior of the temple is adorned with intricate sculptures of various Hindu gods and goddesses. The Nageswaraswamy temple is also decorated with sculptures of various Hindu gods and goddesses. Pitikeswara temples had been built during the reign of the Rayalu dynasty, which ruled the region from 12th to the 16th century. The temples originally served as places of meditation and worship for the local people. Subsequently, the structures fell into disrepair due to lack of maintenance.
