Overview:
Nagina Masjid is a stunningly beautiful and well-preserved mosque located in Fatehpur Sikri, Uttar Pradesh, India. Built by Mughal emperor Akbar in 1571, it was the private mosque of his ladies in his harem. The mosque is situated in the eastern part of the city and is known for its graceful aesthetics. It is built in the typical Mughal style combined with a few unique features that are unique to Akbar's reign. This national monument of India portrays the history and culture of the country.
History:
The most remarkable feature of the Nagina Mosque is its three marble-inlaid minarets, each with four stories, arranged in a rectangle layout. The mosque is constructed from red sandstone and has a spacious courtyard surrounded by pillared cloisters. There is also a tall, slender tower in the center of the mosque, which leads down to a rectangular prayer chamber. The main prayer chamber is surrounded by four small chambers on two sides, each of which is called a ‘khanqah room’ or ‘messenger’s room’. Nagina Masjid was built by Mughal Emperor Akbar on the same site as the palace of his beloved wife, Empress Ruqaiya Sultan Begum. Built with red sandstone in an opulent Mughal style, its five-story minarets are the tallest of any other Mughal mosque in India. The design of the mosque is believed to have been inspired by Akbar's wife's love for diamonds, as the mosque is adorned with intricate diamond-shaped inlay work.
