Overview:
anayanar Temple is a Hindu temple located in Mamallapuram, Tamil Nadu, India. It is believed to have been built during the reign of the Pallava Dynasty of the 7th century. This temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, who is worshipped in the form of Mukundanayanar. Mukundanayanar temple originally had five shrines, three for Mukundanayanar, one for Lord Shiva and another one for Lord Vishnu. Mukundanayanar Temple is a perfect example of the Pallava architecture. The main highlights of the temple are its huge monolithic structure and sculptures carved around the base of the temple. The temple is constructed in a single large rock slab and its overall structure has a unique pyramid-style design. This national monument of India portrays the history and culture of the country.
History:
The prime feature of the temple is its huge 6.5 meter long monolithic structure, making it one of the largest rock-cut temples in Mamallapuram. This monolithic structure enshrines a 6-foot tall Shiva Linga. The temple is further adorned with stunning sculptures of Lord Vishnu, Shiva and Parvati.
