Megalithic cists, also known as tetturai, are megalithic tombs found throughout the Indian subcontinent. They are characterized by large stone slabs, sometimes weighing over 100 tons, that are used to cover a burial chamber. The chambers can be lined with brick, stone, or tiles, and either a single individual or multiple individuals may be buried inside. While megalithic cists have been found all over India, they are particularly prevalent in the South Indian states of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Kerala.
