Overview:
Megalithic cists and cairns with stone circles, Ponmar are a collection of Neolithic megalithic and other structures located at Ponmar Village in Chengalpattu district of Tamil Nadu in India. These various structures – large tombs, megalithic stands, kist, cairns and stone circles – date from between the third and fourth millennia BCE. The structures vary in size, with the stone circles ranging from small, two-meter-wide circles, to large rings with diameters ranging from nine to eleven meters. This national monument of India portrays the history and culture of the country.
History:
The structures at Ponmar Village have been built using some distinctive features. One of the most prominent features of these sites is the presence of megalithic stone circles. These circles consist of upright megaliths arranged in a circular formation, some of which are connected by small stones at their base. Other notable features include cists (stone burial tombs commonly found in Neolithic sites), cairns (stone mounds made up of smaller stones) and kist (rock-cut tombs typical of megalithic sites).
