Megalithic Cists and Cairns, Unamanjeri are a collection of megalithic burial structures situated in the Kottayam district of the Indian state of Kerala. The Unamanjeri cairns date back to the Iron Age, whilst the cists likely date back to the Neolithic Period. The archaeological site spans several acres and contains both cists and cairns. This national monument of India portrays the history and culture of the country.
History:
The megalithic cists of Unamanjeri consist of a number of circular and ovate slabs, which were placed in a circular (or crescent) formation. The cairns of Unamanjeri consist of a number of piled stones, and these are often built around the cist to form circles of upright stones.
