Megalithic cists and cairns (survey no.222) are a series of burial monuments located at Agaram, near Bengaluru, India. It is a megalithic archaeological site and has been listed as an archaeological site since 1918. This national monument of India portrays the history and culture of the country.
History:
The cists and cairns contain several huge stone slabs and a number of artifacts including pottery, beads, and animal bones. These artifacts show that the stones were placed and used in a ceremonial manner to commemorate their dead. The site is also home to many unique ancient pottery styles, including a local red-slipped ware which is commonly found at Agaram. The exact origins of the megalithic monuments at Agaram are not known, however, it is thought to have been built by pre-historic people. It has been suggested that the pre-historic people living in the area settled here as early as 3000 BC and grew to be a major centre of archaeological sites in the 10th and 11th centuries. This area is also known to have been involved in trade of commodities like cotton and metals such as silver and copper.
