Overview:
Megalithic cists and cairns, Kalathur is a megalithic complex located on the west coast of India in the state of Tamil Nadu. The cists and the cairns were constructed during the Neolithic period and date back to 3000 – 4000 BCE. It is believed that the cists contained the remains of the dead and the cairns were used to mark the tombstones by the people of the Neolithic period. This national monument of India portrays the history and culture of the country.
History:
The most prominent feature of this megalithic complex is the large number of cists and cairns made of stone with regular features such as rectangular and square shapes. These cists and cairns are arranged in circles and are found to be headed towards a common center. The center is usually marked by a boulder or rocky outcrop called the shuma.
