Overview:
Mallikarjuna (Siva), located in the town of Srisailam in Andhra Pradesh, India, is an ancient and important Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, who is also known as Mallikarjuna. The temple is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas, or sacred sites of Shiva worship, and has a large number of devotees visiting it every year. The temple is located high up on the mountain of Srisailam, in the Nallamalai Hills, and is surrounded by lush forests that serve as the backdrop for the temple's spiritual significance. The temple complex is also the site of many religious ceremonies and festivals throughout the year, including the Kumbh Mela (the world's largest religious gathering), and the annual festival of Mahashivratri. This national monument of India portrays the history and culture of the country.
History:
The entrance to the temple complex is an impressive structure of cut rocks that seem to have been carved out of the surrounding hills. It is known for its intricate carvings and sculptures, many of which depict characters from Hindu mythology. Inside the complex, there are several other shrines dedicated to various deities such as Ganesha, Vishnu, and Surya. The temple towers (Shikharas) of the central shrine can be seen from far away, and it is said that on a clear day, the shining dome of the bottommost shrine can be seen from miles away. The temple was built sometime between the 6th and 8th centuries CE and is the earliest surviving temple that is dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is said that the location of the temple was chosen by Goddess Parvati, the consort of Lord Shiva, after which the deity of Mallikarjuna was established by the sage of kasi (Varanasi). The temple has been extensively renovated over the centuries and is open to visitors from all over the world who come to seek blessings from this holy center.
