It stands 27 metres high at the north eastern corner of the old city and is dedicated to the beloved prophet, Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him). The mosque contains the holy Quran, Bismillah and other Islamic inscriptions and is intricately carved on the walls. The Mosque also has a sprawling courtyard where up to one thousand worshipers can offer prayers at once. Prayers are performed five times a day. The Masjid also serves as a cultural center in Chennai, hosting festivals and conferences on Islamic topics. It is one of the most famous mosque in India which you must visit.

The Makkah Masjid is an Islamic mosque located in Chennai, India. The mosque was built in the 18th century by two brothers named Syed Ismail and Syed Mahmood, who established it as a religious and cultural centre of the then-burgeoning Muslim community in Chennai. The architecture of the mosque follows the Indo-Islamic style, with the mihrab (the alcove in which the imam stands) housed in an octagonal chamber. The mihrab is made of white slabs and its walls are decorated with intricate carvings and inscriptions in the typical architecture of South India. The ceiling of the mosque is made of wood and is painted in blue, giving it a unique look. The interior is painted in shades of muted yellow and beige, and the stone walls are decorated with intricate designs. The main prayer hall is 85 feet in length and 65 feet in breadth. It is supported by 16 pillars and is roofed by five domes. Alongside the main prayer hall, there are side rooms, minarets, and a spacious courtyard. The abutting buildings have been rented out to commercial shops. This is why, it is considered one of the most beautiful mosque in the world.
