Mahmud Khilji's Tomb is a 16th century funerary complex situated in the small town of Malaun in the Bharatpur district of Rajasthan, India. It is the resting place of Mahmud Khilji, the first Sultan of Malaun, and a powerful ruler of the region during the height of the Mughal Empire. The tomb was built as a memorial to the Sultan and his court. This national monument of India portrays the history and culture of the country.

History:

The Mausoleum of Mahmud Khilji lies on an elevated platform and is built of red sandstone blocks. The main chamber of the tomb is octagonal in shape and is topped off with a large lotus dome. It is adorned with intricate ornamental motifs and is surrounded by several smaller domes and kiosks. Inside the death chamber, the body of the Sultan lies in a coffin along with his descendants. Apart from the burial house other interesting features include a mosque, a palatial gateway and several large chhatris (umbrella pavilions). The Tomb of Mahmud Khilji was built in the 16th century and it is believed to have been built in a period of three years. According to legend, Sultan Mahmud was married to a princess named Sudhabai, and it was on her suggestion that the tomb was constructed. It is said that the Sultan himself had overseen the project, right up until he died. After his death, the tomb was completed and consecrated. The monument and its surrounds were declared a protected area in the year 1930.
