Overview:
Kos Minar or Mughal Mile stone, also known as victory towers, is a type of Islamic architectural monument found throughout the Indian subcontinent, including in Pakistan and Bangladesh. Kos Minar were built in the 16th and 17th centuries by Mughal Emperors Akbar and Jahangir to commemorate their successful military campaigns in different regions of the ancient Indian empire. These towers are usually tall, upwards of 30 feet, and feature a staging viewpoint from which the victorious army surveyed the vanquished lands below and recorded the successful conquest. This national monument of India portrays the history and culture of the country.
History:
Kos Minar or Mughal Mile stone is usually rectangular in shape and constructed of stones and mortar. The front side of the Kos Minar is decorated with large arches, and the top of the tower is generally decorated with copper or brass panels depicting Islamic geometric designs. The inside of the tower generally contains a small chamber which served as a place for the victorious general to observe the conquered lands and record the victory in his personal accounts. The Kos Minar or Mughal Mile stone was invented by the Mughal Emperor Akbar in 1581. The idea for the Kos Minar was inspired by the earlier Saffarid dynasty, which had built similar monuments in Baghdad. The earliest known Kos Minar was built in Ajmer, and other Kos Minar followed throughout the Mughal empire. During the reign of Jahangir, further decorations were added to the Kos Minar.
